The shortlist: compare transmissions as well as prices
Suzuki’s official price list checked on 24 September 2026 lists the five distinct automatic grades below; the Swift two-tone GLX has the same listed price as GLX. The close decision is Cultus AGS versus Swift GL CVT
The listed difference is only Rs 14,140. That makes these two worth driving back-to-back rather than assuming the Cultus is the budget option. Suzuki identifies the respective transmissions as AGS and CVT. [1,2,3]
An automated manual and a CVT do not deliver the same shift sensation. Try parking, crawling traffic, a safe hill start and acceleration with the air conditioning running. Ask the demonstrator how to hold the car on an incline and follow the owner’s manual; do not use accelerator pressure as a substitute for the brake. Check passenger access and luggage loading before deciding which car earns the extra money.
Sedan alternatives deserve an exact quotation
Honda lists City 1.2LS at Rs 4,737,000. Changan’s Alsvin page lists Lumiere at Rs 4,899,000. These leave relatively little room below a Rs 5m total budget. Confirm the transmission and current supplied specification on the order form rather than using a model’s cheapest advertised amount as the price of every grade. [4,5]
Include Toyota Yaris GLI CVT in your quotation round, using Toyota’s current variant page. A separate boot may suit a household better than a hatchback, but test your actual bags and rear seating. This is a focused shortlist, not a claim to cover every import, used car or temporary dealer offer.
If Rs 5 million is your final limit
Subtract registration, applicable withholding tax, freight, insurance and any compulsory accessories before setting your vehicle-price ceiling. Ask which taxes are already included so they are not counted twice. A car priced just below Rs 5m may still be outside your budget.
Keep a separate cash reserve for the first year. Buying the most expensive qualifying variant is not automatically the best decision if it leaves no room for tyres, damage excess or an unexpected household expense.
